Our vision is that the Green Wedge Shire of Nillumbik encourages environmental sustainability and biodiversity, protects neighbourhood character, fosters a caring community and preserves and enhances the Green Wedge.
To achieve this vision, we will listen to and engage the community and our members, give voice to issues and hold decision-makers accountable. We will collaborate with other community groups in Nillumbik in these actions.
The next four years will provide us with some challenges.
Priorities for Friends of Nillumbik (FoN) include:
- The 2025-2029 Council Plan and Financial Plan, which sets out Nillumbik’s service targets, priorities and funding for the next four years. Past Council Plans have not adequately provided for the environment or biodiversity. With the current Green Wedge Management Plan and Biodiversity, Neighbourhood Character and Urban Tree Canopy Strategies approved by the previous council, the next two months provides the opportunity to advocate for their specific funding and implementation in the Council Plan.
- The State Government’s proposed housing capacity targets for Victorian Local Government Areas. Nillumbik’s current total of 22,700 homes is now targeted for an additional 6,500 homes by 2051. All planning schemes will be amended to implement these targets. How this applies in Nillumbik is important to us all, as we seek to minimise potentially adverse consequences for the Green Wedge, the environment and neighbourhood character.
